Camden Arts Center Sunday

Cheese was sleepy on the way to the Camden Arts Center where we saw films and some installations from artist Natalie Djurberg. We also attended a lecture by Dr. Catherine Grant from Goldsmiths; the lecture was titled: Surrealism, Sexuality & Fantasy. Djurberg's videos typically involved some sort of sexual desire acted out in violent or surreal ways typically involving animals. The medium which Djurberg films is through claymation, which innately lends itself to a surreal dream-space. The films were effectively sexual but I did not see an end to the sexual frustration of the heroine (or represented woman) in each film. It only seemed to characterize a new vision of an emotion or experience; like a new analogy or metaphor, but nothing transcending the old idea- rather just a new way of saying an old idea.
